On November 28, 2015, Mr. Carl W. Caviness was called home to be with the Lord.
Born in Siler City, NC November 3, 1954 to the late Hilda and Carl Caviness. Carl was known as “Skip” by his friends and family. Carl was a dedicated husband, father, and friend.
Carl was educated in the Washington DC public school system. He attended Theodore Roosevelt High School. Carl’s talent led him to be an All-Met and All-American quarterback. He was inducted into the school’s football Hall of Fame in honor of James Tillerson (head football coach from 1960-1990’s). He later played college football at North Carolina A&T University. After college Carl had a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks. He continued his football career playing semi-professional football for the Montgomery County Cardinals.
The next chapter in his life was dedicated to “helping people”. He spent twenty-five years working as an assistant physical therapist for Suburban Hospital. Later, he worked as a Special Education Para Educator and Security team member with Montgomery County Public Schools.
Carl was able to share his skills and athletic talents through coaching. He coached football at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD., at Northwood and Blake High schools. He also brought together and coached a group of challenging boys to form the first championship basketball team at Mark Twain School.
During the summer for the past seven years Carl was the Camp Director for the Pro-Power Football Camp which was organized by one of his best friends Mark Smith. He mentored and taught many kids life lessons.
Carl was a down to earth person who loved to cook, grill and be around friends and family. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was outgoing, creative, talented, loved to sing, harmonize with the boys and play the drums and piano. He was well respected and a role model for his students and his community. Carl had a great impact on the lives of many youth.
Carl’s warm spirit, big smile and contagious enthusiasm touched the hearts of many. His presence will be missed.
