Carl J. Stack, 95, of Elkhart, went home to be with the Lord following an extended illness at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, in his home, with his family at his side.
He was born Feb. 2, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Joseph C. and Sibylle (Guenther) Stack.
He later married the love of his life, Laura J. Lehman, on April 28, 1946, in Wakarusa.
She survives at home after 69 wonderful years together.
Also surviving are his children, Susan Rockenbaugh, Ronald (Carol Lee Redman) Stack, Gregory (Sally Reedy) Stack, Richard (Sue Bollero) Stack, Betsy (Danny) Kratzer and Sandy (Tony) Zann, all of Elkhart, and Nancy (John) Kilmer of Columbus, N.J.; his brother, Donald Stack of Elkhart; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Carl in death were his siblings, Edward and Vernon Stack and Louisa Snell; son-in-law Steven J. Rockenbaugh; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
After graduating high school, Carl served in the Civilian Conservation Corps as one of the “boys who built Pokagon,” assisting in building Pokagon State Park. He went on to become a machinist and foreman of the tool and die room at NIBCO of Elkhart for over 42 years, leaving only to serve honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was an accomplished and celebrated craftsman and woodworker and built many things for First Baptist Church while it was still at its former Prairie Street location. He had been a member there since 1953. He will be best remembered for his love of and devotion to family and friends and his ability to use his God-given talents to help others.
