Camp Verde, Arizona – Carl J. Turner (Slim) age 92, died Monday July 31, 2017 in his home after a long battle with COPD. Slim is survived by his wife, Angie Turner and one Son, Carl Turner Jr.. He also leaves behind two grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Smith., Jeffrey Carl Turner, seven great grandchildren: Kaileb Douglas Gunn, Nadia Caitlin Gunn, Chloe Madison Smith, Xander David Smith, Carmela Naomi Turner, Bethany Grace Turner, Andrew Carl Turner, and one great-great grandson Bodhi Micah Smith. Slim grew up in Fork Mountain Tennessee, the first son of Carl Hubert Turner and Ethel Knight. He had two brothers and a sister, George, Fred(deceased), and Deanie. He loved hunting and fishing with his grandfather Roscoe Turner. Slim moved to Richmond Indiana with his family as a teen where he worked at various jobs including hauling coal to homes. Slim is a veteran of World War II. He joined the Army at 19 and became an expert marksman and was known as ‘the squirrel hunter’ in Army basic training as these skills became evident. He trained in artillery in the Mohave Desert. He then spent time in England in preparation for deployment to the front. He was in the 13 wave of the Battle of the Bulge and earned the Purple Heart Citation.
