Carl Edward Landes, an Army sergeant who faced combat in two wars, died on Dec. 16 at Methodist Hospital. He was 86.
Carl was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Watford City, N.D., where he was raised by his grandmother, Sadie, on a ranch that had no power during his childhood. One of his favorite memories as an adolescent was hunting coyotes using his Winchester rifle from a kit plane.
He left high school just short of graduation to enlist in the U.S. Army.
After Korea, Carl was stationed in Germany and at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. It was there he trained to become a medic before serving in the Vietnam War from 1969-1970. One of his proudest moments of his military service was helping develop and test the equipment for checking dialysis in the field.
Carl retired in 1972 from the Army as a Sergeant First Class. Having settled into life in San Antonio, he began work at Mrs. Baird’s as a fleet manager. He worked for the bakery company until his retirement in 1994.
Carl then moved into Hill Country where he enjoyed the remainder of his years on his ranch near Pipe Creek. It was on this ranch he spent time drinking coffee, watching Westerns, playing solitaire on the computer, playing Skip-Bo with family and having fun with his best friend, Apache, a German Shepherd.
Throughout his life, Carl was known for his infectious sense of humor and big heart. There was not a person he met who didn’t become a friend, whether it was the wait staff at IHOP or the employees and residents in the Cibolo House at Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs, where he lived the final months of his life.
Carl was preceded in death by his grandmother Sadie Landes, sister Phyllis and wife Lisa.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Gussie; daughter Donella Anderson and husband Arthur of Dallas; son Timothy Landes Sr. and wife Dianna of Pipe Creek; son Carl Landes Jr. of San Antonio; step daughters Laura Morales and husband Johnny; Diana Arias; Yvette Dibrell and husband Brad; Yvonne Williams and husband Craig; step son Rick Rodriguez; sister Charlotte Landes of California; sister Patty Day of Williston, N.D.; brother Edward Landes of Montana; grandchildren Tim Landes Jr., Heather Stratton, Adrian Moore, Jenna Stewart, Hannah Lucas, Emily Dibrell, Katie Dibrell and Jacob Landes.
