Carl E. Bute, 85, of Ottawa, died Tuesday afternoon, July 11, at LaSalle County Nursing Home in Ottawa.

Mr. Bute was born July 13, 1920 in Ottawa, to Silas Edward and Ella (Sticklen) Bute. He married Lenora Woodyer in Jefferson City Missouri on November 1, 1941. She died in 1973. He then married Marcella Negray of Streator on November 21, 1975. She died in 2000. He was employed for 42 years at Ottawa Silica Company, retiring in 1982.

He was very active in the union movement serving as President of Local 31 for many years. Despite opinions to the contrary the family does not believe the recent play of the Chicago Cubs hastened Carls demise.

He is survived by two sons, Carl M. (Jane Merkel) of Hollowayville and Dennis (Ilse) of Ottawa; a stepson, Randall (Roseann) of Streator; sister, Ellawyn Sipula of Ottawa; two brothers, Herbert of Piqua, Ohio and Victor of Georgia; five grandchildren, Julie Bute, Debbie (Bryan) Guenther and Dennis (Alison) Bute all of Ottawa, Chrislett (Chad Arkenberg of West Union and Troy Negray of Streator; five great grandchildren, Aaron, Matthew and Kayla Guenther and Molly and Shannon Bute of Ottawa.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Bute and a brother, C. Edward Bute.
