Carl Dennis Hickey, 86, went home to be with the Lord on September 27, 2011 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise, Idaho.

He was born January 30, 1925 at Duquoin, Kansas to Maude and Fred Hickey.  Carl had a brother Fred Hickey, from Mountain Home, Idaho and a sister Darlene Russell from Walnut Creek, California.  Both preceded Carl in death.  Carl was raised in Nampa, Idaho, and attended Nampa High School.  He left school early to serve his country in the Army during WWII.  Carl served with honor in the antiaircraft artillery unit for the US Army in Europe.

Carl married Evelyn Carey in 1947 and they had four children, Carla, Tom, Jeff and Kathy. They raised their family in the Boise area. The later divorced. Carl later married Connie Brown in 1974. They had one child, Denae.

Carl had many careers in his life time.  He owned a logging company with his brother Fred in Grangeville, Idaho. He drove long haul trucks, was a finish carpenter, sold insurance in Klamath Falls, Oregon, owned a restaurant in downtown Boise, drove truck for Simplot, farmed in Grand View, Idaho and Mountain Home, Idaho and he drilled irrigation wells in the Mountain Home desert.  All of these career opportunities allowed Carl to have many friends and he was very well known and loved throughout Elmore County.

Carl loved sports and in particular watching his sons play football.  He was their biggest fan, and loved watching them play from the time they were little guys. He was so proud of their high school and college football days. He had the biggest smile on his face when he told friends and acquaintances that his son Jeff played football for Boise State and his son Tom played at Oregon State.  Carl was a Bronco fan, and especially enjoyed the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. When asked what the score of that game was, Carl would have a huge grin and say 43-42 Boise State.  Even as his memory faded over time Carl never forgot that score.

Carl accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior in February of 1997 at the age of 72.

Carl will be remembered for the big smile he always wore on his face. He always had a good joke to share with everyone, or a story to tell.

He is survived by his daughter and son in law Carla and Jeff Nicklas of Boise, ID, son and daughter in law Tom and Jan Hickey of Meridian, ID, son and daughter in law Jeff and Patty Hickey of Boise, Idaho, daughter Kathy Jo Nicklas, Santa Monica, CA and daughter and son in law Denae and Olaf Swanson of Mountain Home, ID.  He was also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and nephews Mark and Tony Hickey, and Rick Russell, and nieces Debbie Foye and Nancy Gerber.

The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the staff at both Grace Assisted Living in Meridian and at the Idaho State Veterans Home.  Your love and care for Carl will not be forgotten.
