CAREY J. CHITWOOD was born in Hanceville, AL, and lived most of his life in Birmingham, AL. Carey is predeceased by his parents, John Henry Chitwood and Mary Lynn Jones Chitwood, and by his beloved sister, Lynn Chitwood Boone. Carey is survived by his nephew, Charles Wyatt Boone. Carey graduated cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College in 1950, and received his L.L.B. from the University of Alabama School Of Law in 1957. Carey was an Associate Editor of the Alabama Law Review. Carey’s father, a highly regarded Methodist minister, served on the Board of Trustees of Birmingham-Southern College. Carey joined the firm now known as Balch & Bingham LLP in February of 1957. At that time, there were 6 partners and 7 associates in the firm. Now the firm has seven offices in four states and Washington, D.C. and has over 200 lawyers. Carey was a member of the Utility, Legislative and Regulatory Section and the Banking, Real Estate and Commercial Section of the Firm. His practice encompassed real estate and contract work, with emphasis on utility and commercial projects. Carey was a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. He loved Birmingham-Southern College, Alabama Law School, and Canterbury United Methodist Church. Carey always enjoyed sports. He was an avid Alabama football fan, and a member of the Birmingham Ski Club and Birmingham Country Club. But more than anything, Carey loved his friends and their families.
