Byron E. “Sonny” Campbell, 86, of Jacksonville, IL died Monday, April 1, 2013 at his residence.
He was born February 3, 1927 in Jacksonville, the son of Byron R. “Humpy” and Myrle Shawen Campbell. He married Ella Aline Evans on March 29, 1957 in Grenada, MS and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2001.
He is survived by a son, Byron L. Campbell of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Lori Baker of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Campbell and Brittany and Joshua Baker; a brother, Ronald L. “Pee Wee” Campbell (wife, Frances) of Sun City, AZ; a sister, Catherine Maxine Dean of Meredosia; and several nieces and nephews.
Sonny was a 1947 graduate of Jacksonville High School and served with the US Navy during WW II. He was employed at J. Capps and Sons Clothiers for seven years prior to joining the Jacksonville Fire Department. He completed a distinguished 28 ½ year career as a firefighter with his retirement in 1983 as a Jacksonville Fire Captain.
Sonny was a member and athletic director for Jacksonville Moose Lodge #865. He enjoyed fishing and pitching horseshoes. He was a member of the former Northminster Presbyterian Church.
