Burt was born on October 17, 1927, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Cecil and Mildred (Ruark) Nixon. He was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Sioux City East High School in 1945. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Morningside College. Burt was employed by the Johns Manville Insulation and Roofing Company in St. Louis.
He entered the US Army on February 13, 1946. Burt served in the Military Police. He obtained his honorable discharge at the rank of Corporal on September 29, 1949.
On November 10, 1951, Burt married Jayne Dubes in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Columbus for a short time where he started his career with Simpsons Roof and Siding Company before moving to Norfolk. Burt took over the company from his father in 1961. He was the President and owner of Simpsons Structures and Crafts, Inc. He remained active in the operation through 1995.
Also, Burt enjoyed managing his farms under the company name of Nixco.
He was very active in the community where he served two terms as president of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of Directors at the YMCA, the Board of Directors at Norwest Bank and the Norfolk Library Foundation Board. Burt was the first President of Concern Citizens. He was a Nebraska Diplomat and was the secretary/treasurer of Northwinds, Inc. He was a founding member of the Norfolk Nebraska Chapter of the International Wine & Food Society.
Burt was a long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served as junior and senior warden.
In his younger years, Burt enjoyed playing handball and volleyball. He liked to golf, hunt and snow skiing.
Burt is survived by his wife of 63 years; their childrenCarol Nixon of Parksville, MO, Scott and Jan Nixon, of Norfolk and Robin and Richard Dolesh, of Norfolk; four grandchildrenKatie and Jeff Austin, Samuel Nixon, Klancy Nixon and Charles and Lydia Nixon; three great grandchildren–Sophie, Ella and Abram; one sister Marsha and Bob Crain.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
