Burton Lowell Jones
On the afternoon of Friday, October 2nd, Burt passed away suddenly but peacefully at Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista due to complications of a heart attack and stroke he had suffered a week earlier.
Burt was from the “original L.A.” as he liked to call it…Lower Alabama. He was born January 5th, 1939 in the small lumber town of Vredenburgh, Alabama (pronounced “vranburg” by the locals) to Minnie Edge and Jamie Luther Jones. He was the youngest of eight; five sisters and two brothers. The family moved to Stapleton, AL during his elementary school years and then Atmore, AL during his high school years.
After Samford, newlyweds Burt and Mitzi went to graduate school at the University of Alabama during the volatile time in our nation’s history when southern colleges were being integrated for the first time. Burt was chosen as Resident Advisor to the dorm where James Hood would stay, and working with the Dean of Students, was able to ensure Mr. Hood’s safety during his stay.
After college Burt and Mitzi lived in Huntsville, AL during which time he and Mitzi had their only child, Lowell Dale Jones in 1968. In Huntsville Burt discovered his calling and gift for organizational training at Tennessee Valley Authority.
During these years he and Mitzi became avid birdwatchers, and in 1998 they decided to semi-retire and move to their favorite birding area in the country, southeastern Arizona. Fortunately, this also happened be close to his son and his family in Tucson, AZ.
Burt was and will always be known for his amazing singing voice, passion for learning, bawdy laugh and rowdy sense of humor. He was always generous with his time, energy and money. He was utterly devoted to and deeply in love with his wife of 54 years. And he was never afraid to speak his mind, but always did so with love and care. There’s no doubt the world is a better place having known Burt Jones.
Burt is survived by his wife Mitzi, his son Lowell Dale Jones, grandson Benjamin Miles Jones, daughter-in-law Teresa Cowan Jones, and his sisters Kitty Hobbs and Marilyn Mote.
