Burton Gene “Burt” Boomershine, 85, of Elkhart, passed away at Elkhart General Hospital on Monday, February 3, following an extended illness.
He was born in Elkhart on Sept. 11, 1928, to the late Noble R. and Emma (Howard) Boomershine. On Jan. 28, 1948, he married the love of his life, Allice J. Grove, in Elkhart. She survives at home.
Also surviving are sons James Boomershine of Indianapolis, David Boomershine of Elkhart and Thomas (Janele) Boomershine of Goshen; daughter Gail (John P.) Sadowey of Elkhart; siblings Robert (Jane) Boomershine and Sharon (Dave) Westlake, both of Elkhart; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding Burt in death were a daughter, Nancy Moore, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in October 2013, and brothers Richard, Jack and Jerry Boomershine.
Burt was a welder for more than 40 years, working at NIPSCO, Miles Laboratories and in a partnership with George Tilly. He eventually opened his own shop known as Burt’s Specialized Welding in Elkhart, retiring in 1994.
He was an avid golfer, even making his own clubs, and over the years he belonged to several area country clubs, including the Elks at Christiana Creek, Bent Oak and Four Lakes. He won many tournaments throughout the years and was a past champion of the Elkhart City Senior Flight several times. Burt accumulated at least 8 holes-in-one during the span of his golfing career and went many years using only one ball — because he never lost it.
He also enjoyed hunting and fishing on those rare occasions when he wasn’t swinging a nine iron and liked to spend time with his children and grandchildren, attending their sporting events many times. He was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and IU basketball, along with any team his grandchildren joined.
