Buddy Joe Hawkins of Shawnee, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the age of 50. Buddy was born in Oklahoma City on June 25, 1973, the son of Jimmy J. Hawkins and Glenda K. (Williams) Hawkins.

Buddy attended high school in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. He developed a love of all things racing as a young man, always one to admire fast cars, motorcycles, and jet boats. Later in life, he turned this passion into a love for drag racing, especially enjoying his races at Thunder Valley.

Buddy was a man’s man, and the type of guy who preferred to keep to himself, watch his favorite westerns, and answer to nobody. This independent mindset allowed him to be a self-employed business owner for most of his working career. He enjoyed working with his hands and had a love and talent for working on cars, able to repair pretty much anything with a motor.

His personality was more like a teddy bear than a feared grizzly, as those who didn’t really know him could sometimes perceive him to be. While he could have a tough exterior, Buddy also had the kindest, most compassionate heart. His soft side was most evident when he spoke of his family and friends – Buddy loved the people in his life with ever fiber of his being. He especially treasured quality time with those he loved. He was a dedicated father and grandfather, and a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Buddy will be very deeply missed by all those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, and his mother and father, Glenda and Jimmy Hawkins.

Left to cherish his memory are two sons, James Hawkins and daughter-in-law Jessica of Virginia Beach, VA, and Brandon Hawkins of McLoud, OK; two grandchildren, Roman Hawkins, and Lyra Hawkins; two sisters, Dana Miller of Yukon, OK, and Martianne Hawkins of Sapulpa, OK, and a brother, Jack “Jimmy” Hawkins and sister-in-law Janet of Collinsville, OK. Buddy is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Karl Wayne, Amanda Miller, Bryan Hawkins, Salina Hunt, Meghan Chappell, Kaycie Norris, Scott McDonald, Nathan Hale, and Ben Hale, his aunt, Linda Wiebe, numerous cousins, and his loving dogs.
