Bryan Douglas Mikus of Boerne entered eternal rest on April 29, 2022 at the age of 49.
Bryan was born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 8, 1973. His parents, Douglas and Helen Mikus, and sister Leslie Taylor describe his personality as larger than life. His wit, and command of the English language became apparent from an early age. Bryan graduated from Blessed Hope Academy in San Antonio. On his eighteenth birthday he achieved his goal of joining the United States Marine Corp. His fierce passion for protecting his country is summed up in his mantra, “I live to serve”. After discharge from the Marine Corp, Bryan continued his service to humanity as an EMT in Houston, Texas, eventually becoming a Critical Care Paramedic. It was his work in the medical field that led him to realize he could use those skills to save lives on the battlefield in Iraq and Afghanistan. This led Bryan to join the Army National Guard in Texas, and later transferred to the Illinois National Guard, where he became a combat medic. His further training allowed him to contract with the Department of Defense, assigned to the Special Operations Command, for a total of eight years. It was during this time that he helped save the life of a young goat herder injured in a minefield near the village of Shindand, in Farah province in Western Afghanistan. The Houston Chronicle published an article about Bryan’s bravery in saving the life of this child and helping the family during this difficult time. For his actions, Bryan was recognized by the State of Texas. A Texas flag was flown over the State Capitol in his honor. These heroic actions are a reminder of the truly fine man he was during his life.
Bryan is survived by his daughters, twin girls, Lesley and Lauryn of Illinois, Aedan Lyday of Alaska, wife, Mary DeVore Mikus, parents, Douglas and Helen Mikus, sister, Leslie Taylor, husband Jeffrey Taylor, their children Jack, Emrey, Harper and Paul Moss, Mary’s daughter, Alexandria and Mary’s parents, Carroll and Denise DeVore. Bryan leaves a void in all of their hearts and is now delivered into his Creator’s arms and he is restored whole.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Winniefred Mikus of Taylor, Texas, maternal grandparents, William and Helen Malcom of Kingsville, Texas.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards VITAS In-patient Hospice of San Antonio for making Bryan’s last days as comfortable as possible while also showing compassion towards each individual member of the family.
