Bruce Alan Kennedy was born on August 20, 1944, in Philip, South Dakota to Garland and Marguerite Kennedy and passed away on March 17, 2023, surrounded by his family.  His family moved to Lovington, New Mexico when Bruce was 5 years old, and his father took a job at the family sand and gravel company.  He attended Lovington public schools and graduated from LHS in 1962.  He then graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Pharmacy.  He took his first job as a pharmacist in Roswell, NM.  He met Doris Francis while in Roswell and they were married in 1971.  Bruce and Doris with children in tow moved to Lovington in 1978 and bought B & J Drug.  They raised 4 kids and lived in Lovington for 30 years before retiring and moving to Ruidoso.  In 2018, they moved back to Lovington and then to Hobbs to be even closer to their grandkids.

Bruce was a loving husband and father who opened his heart and home to many throughout the years.  He invested in the community and was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church.   He was a lay leader, Sunday School teacher,  prayer volunteer, and mentor.  He truly cared for the overlooked and marginalized.   He was always generous, witty, and creative. He was known to family and friends as an artist, gardener, entrepreneur, lover of good books and poetry, collector of art, and though he was a man of few words he could always be counted on to find just the right words to share in many of life’s special moments.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Garland and Marguerite Kennedy, and his siblings Beverly Spears, Barbara Nichols, and Mark Kennedy.  He is survived by his wife, Doris Kennedy, and his children Kelley Kerr, Tim Kennedy, Cindy Kassis, and Christy Martinez and their families.  Some of the things the family will miss most are his great big bear hugs, coffee on lazy mornings, and taking the scenic route where shortcuts became the long way home.
