Brother Robert Arndt Kelly, C.S.C., age 95, died on January 21. 2021 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. He was born in Lima, OH on December 22, 1925, the son of Arthur and Agnes (Arndt) Kelly. He attended St. Gerard’s Elementary and High School in Lima and graduated in 1945. He then attended the University of Dayton from 1945 to 1949 earning a bachelor of science degree in social studies and English. After graduation, he taught fourth and fifth grades at Holy Family School in Dayton until 1951, when he decided to follow a calling to join the Congregation of Holy Cross going to Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, WI in September 1951. He began his religious training six months later at St. Joseph’s Novitiate in Rolling Prairie, IN, and pronounced first vows in February 1953 and final vows in August 1956.
In 1953, Brother Robert began his educational ministry at St. Edward’s H.S. in Austin, TX, and then he was assigned to St. Joseph H.S. in South Bend, IN. for 1953-54. For the next school year, he was transferred to Holy Cross H.S. in New Orleans, LA, and then to St. Edward’s H.S. in Lakewood, OH. for the next nine years. In 1964 he was assigned to Archbishop Hoban H.S. in Akron, OH. as Regional Vocation Director until 1970 when he was re-assigned to St. Edward’s H.S. until 1979. In 1971 he earned a M.A. in guidance and counseling from John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. In 1981 he spent one year on sabbatical at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkley, CA. After this year of study, he was assigned to Gilmour Academy on two different occasions: first, from 1980-1995 and then from 1996-2010. He was a resident at Columba Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame for one year, 1995-1996 and again from 2014-15. In 2015 he moved to Schubert Villa at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN, and in 2017 he became a resident at Dujarié House until his death.
