Bozena Hoppe Grocholski was born in Warsaw, Poland, on October 10,
1943. Bozena graduated from the School of Architecture at the Warsaw
Polytechnic University in 1965. In 1966 she secured a position at the
Atelier d’Architecture Lana et Le Goas Sebillotte in Paris, France, as
a Junior Designer for low income housing projects, allowing her to
leave Communist Poland and begin a successful career as an architect
that spanned over forty years.
In 1968 Bozena moved to New York City, where she met her husband, Tad
Nicholas Grocholski, who predeceased her in 2012. Together with her
husband Bozena lived continuously in New York, with occasional, and
final habitation in Miami, FL. Bozena worked for several prestigious
American architecture firms, including Emery Roth & Sons, Warner,
Burns, Toan & Lunde and Tsao & McKown, among others. Over the years
Bozena was a key designer on numerous construction and renovation
projects in New York, notably the MTA Headquarters, Sanofi-Synthélabo
Pharmaceutical NY Headquarters, the United American Hebrew
Congregation, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Hungarian Consulate and UN
Mission, Time Inc. Reference Library, the Bank of the Philippine
Islands, Kingsborough Community College Library and Closter. In
addition, Bozena worked on many projects in the United States and
internationally, including designs of hotels and private residences.
Bozena died in her home early in the morning on March 14 from
complications caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
Bozena is survived by her two loving daughters, Izabela and Kristina,
and granddaughter Samantha, as well as numerous beloved cousins,
nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers. Bozena’s endurance,
fortitude, tireless dedication to her family and her work, her
talents, intelligence, wisdom, modesty, friendship, and incomparable
kindness and beauty are profoundly missed and will be cherished
always.
