Bonnie Belle (Myklebost) Klahr passed away April 8, 2016, of natural causes in her Fruitland home, Spring Creek Assisted Living. Bonnie was born in Pasco, Washington on June 27, 1921 to Olaf and Beulah Myklebost. Upon graduation from Pasco High School in 1939, she attended St Luke’s School of Nursing in Spokane, graduating in September of 1942. April of 1943 Bonnie was commissioned into the United States Naval Nurse Corps, stationed in Seattle at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Seattle Washington. Orders came from the Southern Pacific Command for her to report for duty – “Destination Unknown.” She boarded a troop transport ship, traveling for 21 days across the Pacific before reaching New Caledonia, and subsequent assignment to Guadalcanal where she and her fellow nurses tended to Sailor and Marine casualties from the war zone. June 15, 1945 Bonnie was detached from the South Pacific and returned stateside to marry Navy Pilot, LTJG James R. Klahr in Hutchinson, Kansas on July 12, 1945. After both were released from their military duties, they returned to his hometown of Parma, Idaho where he became engaged in a farming and cattle operation with this brother, Harry Klahr and raised their two children Russell and Barbara. The two years that Bonnie served in the United States Navy, without a doubt represented one of her most proud achievements and time in her life.
