Lawrence “Binky” Smith, Jr. peacefully passed away at a local hospital. He is the son of former staff member of the Mortuary, the late Lawrence Sr.  Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Barbara J. Smith; siblings, Brenda, Elaine, Dwaine and Seibert. 

Viewing is Thursday, May 1st from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Mortuary.

LAWRENCE FRANKLIN SMITH, JR, affectionately known as “Binky”, was born on April 30, 1956 in San Diego, California. He was the fourth of five children born to the union of Barbara Smith and the late Lawrence Franklin Smith, Sr. Lawrence received his formal education through the San Diego Unified School District and attended Logan Elementary, Memorial Junior High and graduated from San Diego High School.

Lawrence accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and was baptized and became a devout member of Logan Temple A.M.E.

Lawrence’s special gift was making his fantastic peach cobbler for all to enjoy. He was initially appointed as President of the San Diego District Lay Council. When Phoenix and San Diego merged, he became the first President appointed to this position, which he held until he went home to Glory. In February 2009, he received the “The Pastor’s Cup” from his dear friend, the late Reverend. Dr. Howard E. Haggler, Sr. He also received the Lay Council Award for Outstanding Support and Dedication to the Logan Temple A.M.E.

On Tuesday morning, 2:30 A.M., April 22, 2014, God quietly called Lawrence Franklin Smith, Jr. from earthly labor to receive his eternal reward. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted mother, Barbara Smith of San Diego; two brothers, Dwaine Smith (Frivolette) of Sacramento, CA and Sibert (Cassheila) of San Diego, CA; two loving sisters, Brenda Smith McElroy and Elaine Smith both of San Diego; eight nieces and nephews, Porschia Smith-Hopkins, Elaine Smith, Dwaine Smith, II, Isaiah Turner, Paul Taylor, Angelo Salvatierra and twins, Shalea and Shaylia Smith; two great nieces; Kameelah and Kareemah Hopkins; godmother, Lois Williams; his childhood best friend, Meashal Fairley and a host of cousins, other relatives and many, many friends.
