Billy Joe Houchens

May 13, 1944 – May 27, 2021

Billy Joe “Bill” Houchens of Sheridan, Arkansas was born May 13, 1944 in Glassgow, Kentucky, the son of the late James and Dorothy (Davis) Houchens.

He died peacefully on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at St. Vincent Medical Center at the age of 77.

He grew up in Clarks Hill, Indiana and graduated from Laramie High School in 1962 where he was a star athlete in basketball and baseball.  One of his proudest accomplishments was being drafted to a White Sox baseball summer training camp.  He went to work for RR Donnelley & Sons publishing in the 60’s where he became a journeyman book binder.  It was through a friend that he discovered his natural talent and passion for training horses.  He graduated from Reisch Auction College in 1972 and spent the 70’s traveling the US and Canada breeding, training, showing and selling AQHA Quarter horses for numerous high-profile clients and celebrities.  He retired locally from Kohler.

Affectionately known by friends as “Mr. Bill”, he’ll be remembered for his generous out-going nature, his homemade BBQ, his deep belly laugh and his ability to captivate an audience with a funny story.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, James E. Houchens.

Survivors: son, JD Houchens of Little Rock; daughter, Sarah Houchens of Indiana; brothers, Jerry (Becky) Houchens and Charlie Houchens; sister, Judie (Dick) Clawson all of Lafayette, Indiana; ex-wife and neighbor, Pris Houchens of Sheridan; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Special thanks to Kindred Hospice, Jefferson Home Health, SVI Infirmary and Stacey Aaron.

There will be no service per his request.  Friends and family are encouraged to share a memory through the online guest book.
