The family of Bettye is saddened to announce the death of their mother on June 12th, 2008. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, her long battle with respiratory illness finally over. Bettye was born Feb 22nd, 1928 in Mobile, AL, where she lived until she married. A Military wife, she saw much of the world, including Germany, Japan, the Philippines, Iran, and Libya.
Of the things that mattered most to Bettye was her faith and family. She was an avid reader and liked to play word games and could dance up a storm. Anyone who knew Bettye knew that she loved a good conversation.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil Hanks, her father, William J (Honey) Murphy and her mother Frances Lucille Murphy.
Surviving are her brother, Bill Murphy; sisters, Pat Stapleton, Jackie Barnette, and Frances Jaet; sons, Joe Shepard ( Sheila); Bill Shepard (Cookie); daughters, Fran Shepard Clark (Steve); Dawn Shepard Fondy; Kim Hanks Coogan (Jerry); Joni Hanks Fauth (Rod); and Jeannie Hanks; thirteen grandchildren, Jason, Jonas, Joy, Julie, Lerryn, Matthew, Deni, Kacey, Ann, Alex, Abby, Leigh, and Jordan, and eight great-grandchildren.
At her request, she was cremated.
