Betty Jane Swarthout passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in Chariton at the age of 90.

She was born to Leslie Burnett and Helena Hooper in 1923.

She spent her early years in Ottumwa and graduated from Chariton High School in 1941.

Betty was salutatorian of her class and an accomplished trumpet player.

She married the late Lowell Swarthout in 1943 and they made a fun and loving home in Chariton the rest of their lives.

Betty worked in computer programming with HyVee offices for over 25 years and remained very tech savy.

She enjoyed her Ipad at age 90 and continued to text and navigate her home computer throughout her life.

She enjoyed travel, watching sports and playing brain games to keep her wonderful intellect sharp.

However, it was family and friends that brought her the most joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Alan; granddaughter Lori; and two brothers, Les and Jim.

She is survived by sons, Don (Doris) of Pensacola, Florida; Tom (Julie) of Chariton; brother, Ray (Joan) of Des Moines; Sister Bonnie (the late Lloyd) Anderson of Knoxville; grandsons Mike, Jason, Johnny Swarthout; granddaughters, Jenny Swarthout Lewis and Teri Huwe.

She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, daughter-in-law, Dee Swarthout and sister-in-law, Linda Burnett.
