Betty J. Stannard Merrill, 89, died on March 16, 2017 after a short illness at Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming, NM. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca’s Mimbres Crematory. Betty was born on December 19, 1927 in Corvallis, OR daughter to Alvera Beth and Joseph C. Stannard. She grew up living between the states of Oregon and Washington and graduated from high school in Everett, WA. She moved to Ludlow, VT to marry Robert A. Merrill whom she met during WWII., while he was based in Everett. She worked at the phone company and woolen mills before they started their family: George E. (Patricia Jaird) of Enfield, New Hampshire, Patricia White (Michael) of Langhorne, PA, Dale (Kathleen McCarty) of Glenwood, CO. She has 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Betty was office manager at Okemo Mt. Ski Area, Ludlow town clerk before settling for a career in accounting. After passing the CPA exam, she opened her CPA office in Ludlow where she worked until retirement. She was a member of the United Church of Ludlow, the Lions Club, the Women’s Club, the Garden Club along with several Red Hat clubs and rock & mineral groups. She moved full time to Deming, NM in late fall of 2016 after spending many winters there. In Deming, she was involved with the Rock & Mineral Club for over 20 years. She was a Red Hatter, member of a bible study group and volunteered at the senior center. She loved to paint and craft at the Fletcher Farm in Ludlow and spent a great deal of her summer time there. She was prodigious reader spending any spare time absorbed in books.
