Betty Porter, 102, of Middletown, died at Middlesex Health Care Center on October 9th after a brief illness. Born in Worthington, MA, on May 22, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and May (Gurney) Porter and had lived in Middletown for over 40 years. Betty was educated in local schools and the Thompson Secretarial School in Holyoke, MA. From 1925 to 1928, she served as a stenographer in the UMass president’s office in Amherst, MA and served over a decade as a secretary in the UConn Agricultural Experiment Station in Storrs, CT. In 1940, Betty was appointed secretary to the Commissioner of the CT Safety Commission. She enlisted in 1943 in the U.S. Army Air Corps serving as a statistical clerk at Big Spring Bombadier School in Texas until late 1945, when she was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
