Betty Louise Colsrud(Hansen), the daughter of Wesley and Helen (Pettit) Hansen, was born November 15, 1947 in Laurens, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Mallard, graduating from the Mallard High School. In 1970 Betty married Paul L. Colsrud, Sr. in Emmetsburg, IA. They later divorced. Betty raised Paul’s five children and her own with the help of her parents. Because of Betty, the children were able to leave foster care where they were placed after their mother’s death and came to live together as a family.
As a lifelong resident of Mallard, Betty worked at various places in the area, including Berkley’s in Emmetsburg, her own ceramic shop in Mallard and SNC in Emmetsburg as a shift supervisor. Betty enjoyed making jewelry, working on the computer and spending time with family. She had a love for dogs, birds and pets of any kind. Betty died June 21, 2008 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 60. Survivors include her sons and their wifes, Paul Colsrud Jr. and Roberta of Mallard, and Randy Colsrud and Jeri of Estherville, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and three daughters, Marie Reed, Paula Colsrud and Sheri Buettner.
