Betty Lou McKenzie passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at the Sherman Home Hospice of the Valley. 

Betty was born on July 29, 1925, in New Rockford, ND to Arthur and Lillian Mellberg. In 1932, her family moved from New Rockford to Minot, ND. Betty graduated from Minot High School in 1943 and earned her Associates Degree from Minot Business College in 1944. Following her graduation from business college, Betty was employed in various roles including becoming a temporary war appointee for the U.S. Postal Service, a Farm Journal employee in Texas and an assistant to the Ward County North Dakota Register of Deeds. 

On July 29, 1948, Betty and Donald ‘D.C.’ McKenzie were married in the St. Vincent Methodist Church in Minot, ND. Following their marriage, D.C.’s employment relocated them to several cities including Bismarck, ND, St. Paul, MN, Riverdale, ND, Pierre, SD, Sioux City, IA, Omaha, NE, Los Angeles, CA, Langdon, ND and Park River, ND. After retiring from a long and successful career, D.C. and Betty settled in Minot, ND in 1975.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her daughters and her grandchildren, shopping, coffee with friends and her sister, ice cream with chocolate sauce, any kind of chocolate and hamburgers from McDonald’s. She also loved going to the beauty shop, wearing black and white ensembles, leather jackets and wearing her favorite jewelry and red lipstick! 

Betty is survived by her four daughters: Kitty (Bernie) Bachman of Langdon, ND, Connie (Dennis) Jasken of Mesa, AZ, Carrie (Mark) Syrstad of Simi Valley, CA, Kay (Tim Filipi) McKenzie-Filipi of Scottsdale, AZ and stepdaughter, Patricia Garver (and family) of Michigan; nine grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.C., her parents, Arthur and Lillian, her sisters, Marjorie Mellberg and Beverly McKee and her brother, William ‘Sonny’ Mellberg.
