Betty Louise (Corum) Swanson, 90, passed away Thursday June 2, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs due to heart failure. She was the only child of Abe and Edna Corum of Chariton, Iowa. She was born on April 23, 1926 in Chariton. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1944. Betty married Wayne Swanson of Lucas on October 8, 1944, immediately upon his return from World War II. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Lori. They were married just one week short of 60 years at the time of his passing in 2004.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Wayne. She is survived by her daughter, Lori, son-in-law Mike, grandchildren Ryan and Morgan, sister-in-law Jean (Wilbur) Nall, and many nieces and nephews, and her beloved companion cat, Snickers.
Her partnership with Wayne extended beyond their marriage, and they worked together in many roles over the years. They enjoyed exploring the English countryside while they lived in Cromer, Norfolk when Wayne was stationed at Skulthope Airbase during the Korean War. Betty cooked the meals and cared for staff and prisoners at the Lucas County Jail during many of the years while Wayne served as Sheriff. She also worked at the Lucas County Care Facility when Wayne was the Administrator until its closing in 1987.
In their retirement years, they enjoyed woodworking and built many decorative pieces. Betty enjoyed painting the wood pieces after Wayne did the sawing and staining.
She enjoyed living her last few years at The Rose Assisted Living in Council Bluffs. She made many good friends there, and enjoyed participating in group activities and sharing stories in the dining room. Betty was fortunate to celebrate her 90th birthday with a big party in April. Many friends and family were in attendance. A highlight of the party was a musical performance by the Glenwood Community Band Saxtuplets, featuring both her daughter Lori and grandson Ryan. Her hobbies included cooking, knitting, crossword puzzles, reading, chocolate, and her cat, Snickers.
