Betty L. Carr, 91, of Jacksonville, IL died Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Passavant Hospital Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville.
She was born April 20, 1924 at the family home in Pike County, IL, the daughter of Cyrus and Bernice (Ingalls) Hammitt. She married Walter L. Carr on June 23, 1946 in Pittsfield and he preceded her in death on June 25, 1990.
She is survived by three children, Patty Carr of Jacksonville, Peggy Windsor (husband, Wayne) of Macomb, and Michael Carr (wife, Trish) of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Susan Porter (husband, Jeff) of Keller, TX, and Stephen and Michaela Carr, both of Jacksonville; two great grandchildren, Sydney and Allie Chapdelaine of Keller, TX; a brother, Edwin Hammitt (wife, Mardell) of New Salem; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jean Carr, who died following a long battle with cancer in 1960; sister, Virginia Metzger; four brothers, Paul Hammitt (surviving wife, Thelma of Pittsfield), Darius Hammitt (surviving wife, Mary Ann Heightman of Pittsfield), Wayne Hammitt (surviving wife, Lois Ann of Quincy), Robert Hammitt (surviving wife, Lura of Pittsfield); and a brother in infancy.
Betty was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She enjoyed working for several years at food demonstrations, passing out samples of various products at local businesses and greeting everyone with a smile.
She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ and for many years was an active member of the Jacksonville Church of Christ where she served as a Bible teacher and mentor to many young people in the congregation. Until recently, Betty hosted a ladies prayer group each Thursday morning in her home. She possessed a great sense of humor and served as a speaker at ladies church gatherings. She also participated in many entertainment events including her famous “Daisy” performance.
For many years, Betty carried the title of “The prettiest lady in Jacksonville” amongst family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family which will miss her greatly.
