In her 91 years of life, Betty Jean Hultz, earned three names of endearment—mom, Grammy, and Grand mama. On Monday April 5th 2021, Betty Jean passed away peacefully in Urbandale, Iowa. When reminiscing about her youth, Betty Jean would often share about the struggles of growing up in the shadow of the Depression as well as the enjoyment of playing dodge ball in the streets of East Saint Louis, Illinois with other neighborhood kids. She recalled watching her mother serve lunches at her small store to school children and growing up with four older sisters. At nineteen, Betty Jean met the love of her life, George Evan Hultz, and they married within a week of meeting each other. The two amused each other often and remained married for 53 years. She missed him everyday after his passing in 2002.

Due to George’s service in the Air Force, the two moved their family to several states and even overseas to Vietnam. Betty Jean enjoyed moving from one place to the next and found the beauty in each new location, from the breathtaking sunsets in Washington to the warm breezes in South Carolina. Betty Jean and George had three children together, Georgia, Barbara, and Fred. She often referred to her children with adoration and admiration. In addition to her three children, she had six caring grandchildren, Christopher, Lindsey, Scott, Colleen, Mark, and Morgan, and three loving great grandchildren, Holly, Sutton, and Reese. When one spent time with Betty Jean, they often left feeling like they were the most important person in the moments they shared. This rang true in the relationships she fostered with her children and grandchildren. Betty Jean’s love of family created fond memories for them including learning how to needlepoint and cross stitch, grocery shopping, her recipes for pink poppy seed dip and sweet treats, playing with dogs, and many more memories.

Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Nellie Martin and her sisters; her husband, George Hultz; and her grandson, Christopher Sheriff. Surviving Betty Jean are her three children, Georgia Sheriff (Rick) of Urbandale, IA; Barbara Stewart (Mike Macey) of San Antonio, TX; and Fred Hultz of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
