Betty Jean Crandall Satterthwaite, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in Ogden, Utah at the age of 92.
Betty was born on March 31, 1924 in Ogden, Utah. She is the daughter of Myron Richard and Ella Louise Garner Crandall. She attended Ogden City Schools and graduated from Ogden High School.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Betty was called as a missionary to the Spanish American Mission in 1947. She met her eternal companion, Hubert W Satterthwaite, another missionary, while serving in the field. After they both returned home, they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 8, 1949. They continued their love for missionary work and speaking the Spanish language when they were called to serve in the Dominican Republic and California Fresno Missions in 1988 – 1990.
Betty had a strong testimony of the gospel which was evident in her many church callings. She enjoyed being a Sunday School teacher, Ward organist, a den leader, nursery leader, Ward and Primary chorister and visiting teacher to name a few.
Music was a wonderful part of her life. Betty enjoyed singing in the Promise Choir. She and Hubert were members of the Lomondaires Choir. Her children remember Family Home Evenings filled with music. Oh My Grandmother She, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, Bill Grogan’s Goat, A House Becomes a Home and Raggles were family favorites.
She, like her father, enjoyed memorizing and writing poetry. Her children and grandchildren received many valentines and letters with words to a favorite poem or song included. She is remembered at the Gardens Assisted Living Center for her ability to remember and sing the words to many songs and verses.
Betty shared her love of country and community by being a member of the Republican National Committee and volunteered at local caucus meetings and was a Judge of Election for many years.
Betty had many creative talents that she shared with others. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many of her own clothes.
Betty is survived by her seven children; Lynn (Carol) Satterthwaite, Reed (Darlene) Satterthwaite, Diane (Les) Broadhead, Brent (Becky) Satterthwaite, Delwynn (Cheryl) Satterthwaite, Rhonda (Brad) Ferguson, and Brenda (Ed) Haidenthaller. She was blessed with 42 grandchildren and 83 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Ralph Crandall and Robert Crandall. Betty is enjoying a wonderful reunion with her eternal companion, Hubert (who passed away in 1993), her parents and many others who preceded her in death.
