Betty Jane Majors, age 93, of Osceola, Nebraska, passed away July 5, 2019 at the Osceola Good Samaritan Society.
Betty was born May 8, 1926 to Orus and Mary Ruth (Morris) McCubbin in Comanche, Oklahoma. She attended elementary school in Comanche graduating from Comanche High School in 1944. She attended Oklahoma A & M, now Oklahoma State University, graduating with a degree in teaching in 1948. It was there she met Jim Majors. They married in Fort Smith, Arkansas, June 2, 1948. To this union one daughter was born in 1951.
Betty worked at the JC Penney’s store in Stillwater, Oklahoma after graduation while Jim finished his degree in 1949. They then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where Jim taught World War II veterans and Betty taught elementary school. Jim was called back into the military for the Korean Conflict but then honorably discharged in February of 1951.
At this time they then moved to Gresham, Nebraska where they both taught. Three years later they would move to Osceola where they remained. Betty continued to teach in Shelby for some 14 years. After that she was asked to be the Polk County School Superintendent. A position she held for some 15 years.
WIFE took Betty to many states to discuss farm economics which was an issue near and dear to her. She testified in Congress, she appeared on the Phil Donahue show, and helped organize many chapters. After retiring from WIFE, she was asked to help organize the Nebraska LEAD program, for leadership and education. She received the “Allen G. Blezek Friend of LEAD Award” in 2015 at a banquet on East Campus surrounded by many she had met that had gone through the LEAD program.
Besides these things Betty was active in the Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Betty served on the State Personnel Board and was appointed to various ag committees. She was also a Guardian of Jobs Daughters, a member of the United Methodist Church, and a Nebraska Navy Admiral. She was a member of GABS and was a member of the local book club.
Betty enjoyed reading, baking and current events. She was devoted to her grandsons.
Survivors include daughter Ruth Olsen (Bill) of Kearney, 2 grandsons, James Olsen (Jenn) of Phoenix, AZ and Ryan Olsen of Clayton, GA, one great granddaughter, Shelby, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by Jim, her spouse of 67 years, her parents, and one half brother, Don Zeliff.
