Betty Jane Boughner, 76, of Three Oaks, Michigan, died Monday morning, January 16, 2006, at her daughter’s home in Dowagiac, Michigan.

Betty was born June 3, 1929 in Niles, Michigan to Frank and Josephine (Nekvasil) Fleck. She grew up in New Buffalo and graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1947. Betty was an accomplished seamstress, and was formerly employed as an operator for Bell Telephone Company in Lakeside, Michigan. On September 6, 1947 she married James Boughner in Three Oaks, Michigan. Jim and Betty owned and published the Galien River Gazette newspaper in Three Oaks for 28 years, retiring in 1985.

Betty was an avid golfer and member of the Chikaming Country Club. She was also a member of the Three Oaks Community Service Club, the Book Club and Card Club. Betty enjoyed gambling, traveling, and was a member of the Blossomtime Vagabond Camping Club.

Survivors include her children, Brad (Dawn) Boughner of LaPorte, Indiana and Nancy (Dick) Hauch-Scheetz of Dowagiac; grandchildren, Paul, Shelly, Robert, Bradley, Katie, Jerry Jr, Jennifer, Jackie and Jodi; great grandchildren, Allison, Maddie, Kayla, Sarah, Becca, Alec, Ashley, Jerry III, Matthew, Hailey, Rachael, Brandon, Tyler, Zoe, Cloe and Skylar; sisters, Rose (Jack) Covert of Three Oaks, Barbara (Will) Covert of West Richland, Washington, and Kathy Benington of East Lansing, Michigan; brothers, Richard (Becky) Fleck of South Carolina, Jim Fleck of Bridgman, Michigan, Ron Fleck of Buchanan, Michigan, and her step father, Walter Gray of Three Oaks. Betty’s husband preceded her in death on February 21, 1993.

She was also preceded in death by her father, Frank; her mother, Josephine Fleck Gray in 1998, and her brother Frank in 1999.
