MORITZ, Betty G., Kalamazoo. Betty passed away peacefully on September 18, 2009. She was born October 10, 1927, in Hamilton, Ohio to Otto and Ethel Reid. Betty was preceded in death by infant sister, Patty, and her husband of 53 years, Dr. Edward Moritz, Jr. who was the true love of her life.
She is survived by four children, Stephen Robin Moritz of Lansing, John Holly and her children Amanda, Kennady, and Sam Moritz of Holland, Richard Margaret Moritz of East Grand Rapids, and Sarah Moritz of Spring Lake; and 11 grandchildren, Matthew Rebekah, Benjamin, and Nicholas Moritz; Alexander, Andrew, and Katie Moritz; Erick and Spencer Moritz; and Rebecca, Sabrina, and Anja Hochhuth; brothers, Gary Miriam Reid of Florida and Jan Joyce Reid of Ohio; sister-in-law Vivian Gould of Ohio; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Also revered as family were the Kalamazoo College faculty and her bridge club.
Two of Betty’s passions were gardening and antiquing. She could work in her yard for hours with the fruits of her labor blossoming all summer long. Her enthusiasm for antiquing was never ending as she was always on the lookout for the most unique items, especially jewelry. Betty felt fortunate to have lived in Europe two different times while her husband was on sabbatical.
Betty’s life was fulfilling in so many ways. She was able to stay home to raise her children, obtain a degree in education from Western Michigan University at the age of 58, and then use that degree teaching. Betty was a devoted wife and mother, and her greatest joy was being surrounded by family, especially celebrating Christmas and birthdays. She loved to share memories about the wonderful times the family had with neighbors, friends, and relatives at 420 Edgemoor – the family home for over 45 years. Betty was a gracious, loving person and touched so many with her warm heart. Her kindness and compassion will continue to live in all those whose lives she has touched. Her entire life was spent giving to others, and she will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Sunrise Assisted Living of Cascade for their loving care of Betty.
