Betty Hanson Smythe of Newnan, Georgia died on December the 17th of 2011 at Southwest Christian Care in Union City, Georgia. Betty was born June 12th, 1930 in LaGrange, Georgia; the daughter of Charles Cleveland Hanson and Katherine Louella Johnson Hanson.

Ms Smythe was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Box Smythe and son, William Box Smythe III. She completed one year of college at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Betty worked part-time during much of her life as a secretary for numerous companies, including Colonial Foods and Delta Air Lines. She had many lifelong friends and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, reading and sewing (making many of her daughter’s clothes).

Betty was a member of Senior Friends, the Red Hatters (now Dining Divas), AARP and a wonderful cross-denominational Sunday School class in Newnan. Perhaps most of all, she loved her life of worship and fellowship at Newnan Presbyterian Church.

Betty is survived by a devoted family which includes her daughters, Margaret (Marty) Wagner of Monroe, Georgia and Joan (Jo) Reed of Jasper, Georgia; Sons-in-law Rev. Dr. Dane Wagner and Stanley Reed; Grandchildren Ben Reed, Chris Reed, Ivey Castleberry and Katie Underwood; Great grandchildren Sophie Castleberry and Abbey Castleberry.
