Bette Jo Marak GriffinBette Jo Marak Griffin, formerly of Mission, Houston, and Georgetown, passed away on July 22, 2015 in Boerne, Texas, with loved ones at her side. Born in 1925 in Grinnell, KS, Bette is pre-deceased by her parents Dorothy Kobler Marak and Peter Paul Marak, her brothers Kenneth T. “Ted” Marak, Robert J. Marak, and Sam A. Marak, her husband of 31 years, James “Jim” D. Griffin, Sr., and her granddaughter, Katherine Meghan Hill. As a young woman, Bette supported herself by working at a local movie theater, and like many girls of her generation, mourned the loss of classmates and sweethearts in the upheaval of WWII. Bette and Jim married in 1944 and settled in Mission, TX, where they started a family and established a farm on Inspiration Road. Over the next 31 years, Bette was a devoted mother and homemaker, raising four children through all manner of adventures and challenges while still finding time to lead girl scout troops, decorate floats for the annual Citrus Parade, and host youth rodeos at the farm. When Jim died in 1975, the children were grown, and the youngest was a month away from starting college. Still vital, Bette accepted an invitation to join a friend on a two-week cruise; here began a whole new chapter of life filled with world travels, artistic pursuits, two more husbands, and adventures with friends and family near and far.
