Bertha D. Karnes, (1911-2012) of Caldwell died March 29th, at a Nampa Assisted living facility.
Bertha had been a seventy plus year resident of Caldwell, and was well known for the “magic” she could create with a sewing machine, at one time (1970-73) she was employed at the Singer Shop, Karcher Mall, as a sales person. She also was a sewing instructor and taught any number of women, of that period, the art of personal clothes making. She was a dedicated craft worker and created many beautiful craft-arts during her retirement years. For quite a few years Bertha worked for Crookham Seed Co., and, she and her husband Roy also maintained a small dairy operation located on Marshall Street before Caldwell expanded to the southwest.
In her early seventies Bertha was left with the responsibility of caring for her only child, Louis, who eventually died as a result of the debilitating effects of rheumatoid arthritis.
Bertha continued to live in her own home for several more years and age ninety-three decided that maintaining a home was too much hassle and eventually moved to independent living; then on to assisted living.
Bertha was the fifth child of Charles and Carrie Brown. She was born at home, on the family farm, January 13, 1911 at Merna, Nebraska. She had four sisters, Myrtle, Ruth, Grace and Fannie (all deceased). There were also two brothers, Ray (deceased), her youngest brother, Lester, is living in El Paso, Texas.
Bertha’s long-time friends, Bertha and Gerald Fitch, want to express their gratitude to the staff of Park Place Assisted Living for the TLC displayed and provided to our special friend. And to nurse Tony who went over and beyond what is expected of an employee. We also appreciated our brief experience with the Legacy Home Health and Hospice staff for the loving care extended these past few days.
