Those left to honor Bert’s memory are his wife, Joan Smith of Newton; son, Marty (and Tonya) Smith of Newton; his daughter, Mary (and Tom) Jamieson of Newton; 5 grandchildren, Brian and Stacey Thorson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carter and Cole Smith of Newton, and Arianna Jamieson of Newton; his brother, Fred (and Joyce) Smith of Dubuque, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Oliver and Dorothy (Stiles) Smith and brother, Richard Smith.
Bert worked as a supervisor in Automatic Assembly at the Maytag Company for 37 years, retiring in 1988.
He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955.
