Bernis Smith, age 75 of Griffith, IN went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 19, 2020. Bernis’ days of suffering in silence are over. She will get to see the face of our Lord. She was a devout Christian, who attended church services as much as she could, until her health precluded her from doing so. She found strength and comfort in her relationship with the Lord. She was a saint; in that she knew and loved her Lord. She was not prefect by any stretch of the imagination, none of us are.
Bernis had been part of our family for over 54 years. She has been a best friend to my mother Claudine Daugherty through thick and thin. Our dear Bernis has been a confidant, the levelheaded, quick witted, sounding board, a shoulder to cry on when you were hurt, and a no nonsense call you on your hooey.
Most of all Bernis was tender hearted, she had empathy for the sick, less fortunate, defeated and discouraged. She always had a way of making things look less dark and showed you to the sliver lining. If you didn’t want to know the truth of the matter, then you probably shouldn’t have asked Bernis in the first place.
For all of these things Bernis has touched my life and of those who really knew her. Our dear friend wasn’t handed a death sentence via cancer, she was already given the gift of eternal life through her salvation. Bernis believed in that promise and set her eyes upon Jesus. She knew exactly where she was going. Now Bernis has a new home in the Kingdom of Heaven with a complete and perfect body.
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of your hand.
