Bernardino (Bernie) Nieto Sr. passed away on May 12, 2019 in his home surrounded by his wife Marta and family.
Bernie was born in Bernalillo New Mexico. In his youth, his parents Epimenio and Filomena Nieto moved from New Mexico to Bellemont, AZ where he attended Emerson Elementary School. When he was nineteen years old he went into the U.S Army and served from 1942-1946. He was a World War II Veteran and served in the Philippines in Guadalcanel. In the 1950’s he moved back to Flagstaff and worked in construction, then later met the love of his life Marta Contreras Nieto.
Mr. Nieto was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ernesto Nieto and Epimenio Nieto Sr. who were also World War II Veterans.
Mr. Nieto is survived by his wife Marta and three children Ernestine (Chewy) Hernandez, Bernie Jr. (Dolores), Dorothy (James) Watson, five granddaughters, one grandson and eight great grandchildren. His wife Marta and family would like to thank Dr. Jelineck and Nurses from the Veterans Hospital in Prescott, Az for the care they gave him when he was hospitalized last July.
We would also would like to thank Angela, Serina, Rachael, Dr. Allen Baehr from the Flagstaff V.A Clinic for all the support and care given during Bernie’s illness. A very special thank you to Mayra Baldenegro for her love and care for Bernie. With heartfelt gratitude to all, and God Bless.
