Bernard J. Carr, 94, of 280 E. Losey St., Galesburg formerly of 121 W. Simmons St., died at 6:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
Bernard was born on April 11, 1914 in Galesburg, the son of Edward and Mariah Boyd Carr. He married Leona Case on April 7, 1947 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on June 15, 1994. Surviving Bernard are several cousins including, Mary Madeline Carr, Leo B. Carr, and Thomas Joe Carr all of Galesburg, Bernadine A. Gardner and James E. Carr both of Littleton, CO. Bernard was preceded in death by 1 brother, Charles; 2 sisters, Helen Carr and Mary Carr; and 3 cousins, Francis M. Carr, Norman C. Carr, and Patrick E. Carr.
He graduated from St. Joseph Academy and Corpus Christi Lyceum in 1934. He worked in Maintenance for Illinois Light and Power Co. for many years. He then worked in maintenance at St. Mary’s Hospital. He served in the Army Air Corp, 7th Squadron, South Pacific, Engineering Department during WWII. He was an active member of Father J.O. Hunt Knights of Columbus Council 556 and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Bernard was responsible for the installation of the American Flag at his residence, Mary Allen West Towers. He was Santa Claus for all the children’s Christmas parties at St. Mary’s Hospital for many years.
