Bernard (Barney) James Fergus, 74, of Harrells, NC, died January 21, 2018.
Barney graduated from Arundel High School in 1961, joining the U. S. Army immediately afterwards. He served with the 24th Infantry Division in Germany before returning to civilian life in 1964. He became a correctional officer at Patuxent Institute, retiring after 20 years at the rank of Sergeant. He and his family relocated to Harrells, NC where he continued working at various jobs. It will always be said that Barney never met a stranger and was considered a friend by all that met him.
Barneys’ passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many and though life may go on without him, it will most definitely not be the same for the world and those left behind.
Barney was preceded in death by his parents, Howard E. Fergus and Margaret M. Dougherty, and one grandchild. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Shirley Helen Fergus of the home; brother, Howard J. Fergus (Kim) of Virginia; step-daughter, Emily Castleberry (Robby) of North Carolina; two grandsons, Cody J.W. Darlington and Dustyn E.A. Darlington, both of Florida; a great grandson, Carter J. Darlington of Florida; two nephews, Bradley Fergus (Nina) and Colin Fergus (Kate), both of Maryland; two great nieces, Paige and Brooke Fergus of Maryland; his best friend, Phil Pontak of Ammon, NC; and his faithful constant companion dog, Susie Q.
