Bennie Martin Thorson (Uncle Bennie) of Penrose, departed this world on October 15, 2022, and is home resting with Jesus, awaiting his new resurrected body. Bennie was born to Bennie Carl Thorson and Sylvia Ina Thorson on March 8, 1958, in Canon City, Colorado. He graduated from Canon City High School in 1976 and spent his life in Fremont County.
Bennie worked for the Colorado Department of Corrections for more than 20 years. The majority of his DOC career was spent at the Four Mile Correctional Facility in the recreation department, and he enjoyed working on the escape team. Later, he ran heavy equipment for several outfits which gave him the opportunity to travel some and meet new people. Bennie loved people.
Bennie was larger than life. He was a cowboy, mentor, and an extremely patient teacher. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix with some duct tape, a little bailing wire, and perseverance. Children were always drawn to Bennie, who was referred to by some as the “Kid Whisperer”. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with the next generation and taught countless people to ride, drive, run equipment, and eat good watermelon with salt. While Bennie devoted his life to Indian Springs Ranch, outside of his ranch, Bennie enjoyed playing softball, hunting and fishing, time with his family, and sharing a drink with his friends. Bennie just loved people.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Sylvia Thorson; and his sisters, Sonja Just and Marina Thorson.
Bennie is survived by his son, Scott (Shana) Thorson of Canon City; his daughter, Leslie (Chad) Adamic of Penrose; his granddaughters: Breahnae Thorson, Thyrrni Thorson, Eleanor Thorson, Olive Thorson, Annika Adamic, Nora Adamic, and Skadi Adamic; his brother, Bjorne Thorson; his sisters: Ina (Bill) Finch, Carlina (Allen Mason) Henry, and Christina Hulin; close nephew, Michael Finch; close nieces, Molly Thorson and Jessica Mason, along with numerous other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
