Bennie “Ben” V. Hess, 87, of Edwardsville died Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at his home.
Mr. Hess was born July 23, 1918, in Marine Township to Henry and Annie (nee:Gieselman) Hess. On April 8, 1939, in St. Jacob, he married Lena (Schmitt) Hess and she survives.
Mr. Hess grew up in Pin Oak Township and farmed for more than 40 years. He also worked as a car and tractor mechanic in Highland and he owned and operated Hess Service Station in Edwardsville. He was extremely knowledgeable in motors of all sizes and loved what he did. Mr. Hess was quite successful in the lawn mower business for 28 years. He was a member of United Church of Christ in Marine.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Thomas (Carol) Hess, and two daughters, Betty (Joe) Szatkowski and Mary (Jim) Helms all of Edwardsville, a brother, Edwin (Nina) Hess of Jerome, Mo., a sister, Mabel Gieseking of Edwardsville, 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Robert Hess and Gerald Hess, three brothers, Joseph Hess, Earl Hess, and Henry Hess, and two sisters, Mamie Holtmann and Emma Wessel.
