Bennie Gilbert was born on in Barbour County Alabama, to Mr. Author and Daisy Gilbert. He transitioned on Tuesday August 23, 2022 at his mother’s home in Eufaula, AL. He was preceded in death by his father Mr. Author Gilbert, sister Dorothy Gilbert, and brother Cedrick Maurice Gilbert. He was married to the late Mrs. Leslie Diane Steward Gilbert for over 40 years, and they remained together until her untimely passing in November 2020. He was affectionately called “BJ” by his closest family and friends. BJ wasn’t a BIOLOGICAL father to any children, but he certainly was a FATHER to three “step-kids”, and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them: Robert “Punkin” Rodgers, Earl Rodgers, and Sharonda (Lynare) Rodgers-Ford. He had three grandchildren: Attriyanh Powe, Kezalin Miley, and Lynare Ford, Jr; one great grandchild: Bentley
BJ attended church at Greater Hope Church in Eufaula, Al, where his loving mother, Daisy Gilbert, serves as the founding Pastor. He was a very hard working man, and he was an awesome provider for his family. He held several jobs over the past several years of his life: he was an employee of Southern Classic Food Group in Brundidge, AL for almost 5 years, and recently resigned from his position there due to his declining health. He also was a former employee of Car City in Brundidge, AL for several years. Perhaps his favorite, and certainly the position he held the longest, was at Gilland Chevrolet in Ozark,AL where he served faithfully as the DETAIL MANAGER for over twenty+ years. BJ was an entrepreneur, he owned a MOBILE DETAILING unit – “Bennie’s Pressure Washing”, and he was well known throughout Ozark, AL and the entire wiregrass area, for being one of the best Automobile Detailing man in the game.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: His mother- Pastor Daisy Gilbert; sisters Joyce Gilbert, Arleen Kennedy, Mary Gilbert, Carolyn Gilbert-Caldwell (Robert), Caroline Gilbert-McCray (Gregg), Sharon Adams (Earnest), Latasha Gilbert; brother Emanger Landale Gilbert; three extended siblings: Greg Bishop, Robert DeAndre Lampley, and Monica Lampley; four aunts- Katherine Herron (Hempstead, NY), Mary Gladys McLendon (Baldwin, NY), Jane Exum (Ozark, AL) and Bobbie Ree Walker (Louisville, AL); three uncles- Roy McLendon (Lela) Freeport, NY; Nathan (Ruby) Gilbert Midway, AL and Bishop Mitchell Gilbert (Susie) Adairsville, GA.
Nieces and nephews: Alvin Thomas, Angelo Gilbert, Kenta Kennedy, Kenyata Gilbert, Kenvisa Baxter, Tiffany Baxter, Keisha Harris (Michael), Latisha Gilbert, Craig Gilbert, Gregory McCray, Antwan McCray, Aaliyah McCray, Travis McCray, Dexter Gilbert, Xavier Adams, Corey Gilbert, Quay Gilbert, Kia Gilbert, Mya Gilbert, Cedric “Brownie” Gilbert, Demetria Gilbert, and and a host of great nieces, nephews, loving friends and former co-workers.
