SCHMIDT, Benedict J. passed away Monday evening, July 6, 2015 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids surrounded by his family following a brief battle with leukemia. He was born on November 12, 1956 in Battle Creek, the son of the late Arthur and Irene Rosenberry Schmidt. He grew up in Bellevue, MI and later moved to Wall Lake in Delton, MI. He graduated from Delton Highschool in 1975 and began serving as a veteran of the United States Navy as a Corpsman from year 1975 to 1979 then continued in the reserves. On August 4, 1984, he was united in marriage to Sharon J. Teske.
Ben attended Nazareth College where he received his Bachelors in Science in Nursing in 1984. The last 30 years, Ben was employed at Borgess Medical Center. With the last 9 years in the Cardiovascular Lab. He was married to his wife Sharon and would have celebrated 31 years of marriage this August. Some of the things that Ben most enjoyed were his involvement in his church, leading men’s prayer groups, prayer captain ministry, and working in kids ministry. He also enjoyed doing ministry with the homeless outreach. He enjoyed the outdoors and found peace in canoeing on rivers and Lake Doster, long walks in the woods, biking, and tasting new and different foods with family and friends. His greatest joy was spending time with his four daughters and family.
Ben expressed himself best in his writing. You can check out his most recent writings on caringbridge.org. His passion until his death was seeking the Lord and to point others to Jesus Christ. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Sharon Schmidt; four daughters, Angela John Janssen of Kalamazoo, Laura Nate Schubkegel Schmidt of Plainwell, Gretchen Schmidt of Plainwell and Meredith Schmidt of Plainwell; two brothers, Dave Mary Schmidt of Traverse City, and Tom Mary Schmidt of Chesterfield; sister, Anita Rosenberg of Norton Shores; and several nieces and nephews.
