On Tuesday, November 29, 2022, Barrington Horace Chandler, Sr. transitioned home to be with the Lord. Barrington was born on July 29, 1939, in Washington, D.C. to Thelma Rotay Chandler. He was the second oldest of ten children.

Barrington was educated in the D.C. public school system and his educational track ended at Anacostia High School. He was always a provider for his family and even worked as a teenager to care for his mother and siblings. He worked for Woodward & Lothrop Department Store, T. Washington Oil Company, and Bremington Warehouse Terminal where he initially started as a day laborer and progressed to the position of a unionized truck driver after obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License. He enjoyed many professions but dedicated most of his career to professional truck driving. He ended his career working with TNT Red Star Express and successfully retired as a member of Teamsters Local Union 639 and reached the milestone of driving over one million miles without incident.

Barrington’s first marriage to Patricia Richardson ended in divorce but their union produced five children: Patrice, Darryl. Michael, Eric and Kim. On May 25, 1973, Barrington married Portia Jones and from their union, two children were born: Cory and Terryl. In addition, Barrington was blessed to be a father to his children Greer, Barrington, Lisa, Barron, Anita, and Karen and a father figure to Keith, Hazel, Anthony and Sheila.  Family was very important to Barrington and although he came from modest means, he worked hard to support them and was generous with all that he had.

Barrington was affectionately known by many as “Bee” or “Bee Bee.”  He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed long fishing trips with his family and friends.  Barrington loved cooking and was well known for his homemade biscuits and famous fried fish, shrimp and potato dinners.  Although he often had a serious demeanor that could be perceived as intimidating, Barrington had a generous spirit and sense of humor. He knew how to command a room and loved to laugh and joke with family and friends.

Barrington was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.  He was preceded in death by his daughters Patrice and Karen, son Darryl, brothers Jerryl Sr., Larry, Gregory, Karrenton and sister Norma. Barrington leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 49 years, Portia; sons Barrington Jr. (Jennifer), Michael (Lynise), Barron, Eric, Kim, and Terryl (Mia); daughters Greer, Anita, Lisa and Cory; brother Roland; sisters Patricia Gardner, Gloria Taylor Jennings and Carolyn Gerald; brother-in-law James Bank III (Shahlaurie); sisters-in-law Jocelyn Whitehurst and Ruby Chandler; devoted nephew James (Tiana); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones.
