Barge Nathan Davis, Sr. was born March 7, 1934 in Washington DC., to the late James Nathan Davis and Lucille Davis. The oldest of three siblings, he is survived by his Sister; Peggy Burriss and Brother; Rev Rodney Davis. He departed this life peacefully on April 1, 2013 at Veterans Hospital, Washington DC.
He was in the first Graduating class of 1952 at the Historical Washington Carver High School Montgomery County, Maryland. Afterward, he discovered a passion for the automotive repair industry that later became his livelihood. Barge was known for his charming personality and joyful spirit. During a warm summer night, an APB (All Point Bulletin) had been sent out via Motorola that a vehicle had been clocked at speeds over 100mph and that a road block had to be set up. After this speed demon was caught and placed before a Judge, he was given two choices, to serve jail time or Join Uncle Sam’s Army. Barge Davis decided to serve his country and chose the Army. He served two years, eighteen months of which were served in Seoul Korea as a diesel mechanic. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home to Rockville Maryland. Barge started working in the garage of his parent’s local convenience store known as Jim’s Esso.
Barge considered himself a ladies’ man throughout the DC Metropolitan Area, until he met the love of his life, Phyllis Borders of Takoma Park Maryland. She was quite his match, but through lots of persistence and charm Phyllis finally gave in. They married in April 1960 at their current home in Silver Spring, Maryland. In this Union of over Fifty Years, two sons were born, Barge N Davis, Jr. and Mark A. Davis, Sr.
Barge Sr. was very active in many different social events such as the Imperial Rods Drag Racing Club, Wheeling his 56 Chevy Convertible or his 58 Chevy Apache. But his main passion was the Golf Course starting from the Par 24 Club of Rockville Maryland where his Uncle Joseph Davis (deceased) introduced him too. Later he joined the Fun Lovers Golf Club of Washington, DC. During the off season he was an avid bowler and pool shark where he successfully participated in various leagues. All of which he developed many relationships from all walks of life even revered to this very day.
In his later years he joined Mt Calvary Baptist Church Rockville, Maryland and was baptized by his Uncle Rev Henry Davis (deceased). He later attended United Hearts CCC, Silver Spring Maryland, Rev Carlton H. Talley, Pastor.
Barge Sr. was a man of the people, and had a larger than life spirit. He would greet you with a warm smile, and talk to anyone, anytime, about anything because that was the kind of man he was. He loved his family and friends, good times and lived life to the fullest. If you asked him how he was feeling, he would smile and reply “If I felt any better, I’d have to take something for it”. His was truly a life well lived.
