Barbara Remy, age 80, of Algona passed away on December 19, 2017 at her home. Barbara Ann Bacon, the daughter of Rick and Reba (McPike) Bacon, was born on July 3, 1937 in Peoria, Illinois. She graduated from Peoria High School in 1955. She attended Iowa State University and Long Beach State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Barbara also attended Bethel Seminary and received a certificate in Theological Studies in 1988. While at Iowa State, Barbara met Tracy Remy who was a table waiter at her sorority. After their engagement while at Iowa State, Tracy, having received his commission in the US Navy, was assigned to a ship with its home port in Long Beach, California. They were united in marriage on June 21, 1958 in Peoria, Illinois. They lived in Long Beach while Tracy completed 3 years of naval service, and Barbara completed her bachelor’s degree. Their first son was born there. The couple lived in Chicago for six months, Ames, Iowa for four years, where their other two sons were born, and Albert Lea, Minnesota for eleven years before moving to Algona in 1975. Relationships were important to Barbara, and she established close friendships wherever they lived, mainly through their church involvement. Throughout her life she maintained a close connection with two women from Peoria who were childhood friends. As their three sons grew older and left home, Barbara became involved in leading bible studies with Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was greatly enriched by this involvement, and this motivated her to study at Bethel Seminary. Later, she led informal women’s small group bible studies. Barbara greatly enjoyed helping others, physically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually, especially when she became aware of needs. She frequently hosted couples in her home to celebrate birthdays or other special occasions. She especially liked to surprise friends with a celebration in their honor. She delighted to share their lake place with her family, with other families and friends, and especially with single parent families. A taco supper for guests was her “specialty.” Barb also enjoyed reading, and she accumulated a collection of books, mostly on spiritual and health topics. Left to cherish Barbara’s memory is her husband of 59 years, Tracy; three sons, Rick Remy of Algona, Doug (Debbie) Remy of Phoenix, AZ, and Russ (Kerri) Remy of Estes Park, CO; grandchildren, Kara Remy and her children Alex Remy and Aliyah Buscher, Nicki (Ray) Roof and their children Chase and Ruby, Alicia (Zac) Thompson, Jenalee Remy and her daughter Zoe Linderer, Serena Remy, Michael Remy, John Remy and Tim Remy; and cousins, Jerry McPike of Washington, D.C., Madie Jane Pray of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Betsy Flam of Webster, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
