Barbara Hellwig, a resident of Newnan, died early Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Brightmoor Hospice, following a hard fought fight with cancer. She was 81 years old. She was born on July 21, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to Paul and Alice Cito; the oldest of five children.
She was married to Richard Hellwig for 44 years before his death in 2005. Mrs. Hellwig was a loving wife who followed her husband up and down the east coast for his life in the US Navy. She volunteered for many organizations throughout her lifetime such as Navy Wives, Prevention of Blindness, and a hospital volunteer.
She moved to the Atlanta area in 1987 where she has lived out her remaining life. She was a member of Christ Our Hope Lutheran Church in Riverdale, Ga. She was an avid artist for 17 years and a member of the Newnan Coweta Art Association.
Survivors include 2 daughters Teresa Kushnereit, Pensacola, FL; Melanie (Mike) Mikko, Newnan, Ga; 2 sons Richard (Joni) Hellwig, Concord, Ga; David (Angie) Hellwig, Grantville, Ga; a sister Carol (Chuck) Conlon, East pointe, Mi; a brother, Charlie (Marilyn) Cito, Shelby Township, Mi. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
