Barbara Eugenia Penney, 87, of Taneytown, MD, died after an extended illness on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at Gettysburg Hospital. Born July 18, 1934 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late O. Eugene and Greta A. Penney.
Barbara graduated from Tufts University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She practiced as a licensed Veterinarian for fifty years thereafter. In that time she was involved in teaching programs at Penn Vet as well as the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland. She was also involved in researching numerous areas of Veterinary/Human medicine. She worked in the animal research division of NIH for a number of years. One of Barbara’s greatest satisfactions was to enable students to gain the needed knowledge and practical experience of their chosen professions in animal care.
In some of her spare time, Barbara held an Assistant Handler’s license, traveling on Dog Show circuits with breeders and handlers. In addition to her love and care of animals, Barbara was always interested in the history of the areas in which she lived and participated in events celebrating their development. She was a charter member of the National Museum of the American Indian and several conservation organizations. Locally, she was, along with her parents, a founding member of Taneytown Baptist Church. Although Barbara did not have children, she treated her nieces and nephews and many other young people as her own.
Surviving is her sister Susan Penney Allport and husband Timothy of Tarrytown, NY; nieces and nephews Linda Allport McDermott, Alicia Penney Corson, Nolan Penney, and Andrew Allport; their spouses and ten great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Richard Penney.
