Barbara Huls Broderick, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away peacefully, at age 86, on October 9, 2015. She was one of two children born to Frederick “Fred” Eugene Huls and Alice Hamilton Huls of Logan, Ohio. In 1950, Barbara graduated with highest honors from the Western College for Women, Oxford, Ohio. It was there that she met her future husband, George, a WWII Marine veteran and Miami University graduate, class of 1949. After marrying and living briefly in Detroit, MI, the couple moved to Phoenix, AZ in January of 1953. They reared two daughters, Laura and Rebecca. While serving as a community volunteer, Barbara was elected the President of the Phoenix Junior Women’s Club. Barbara went on the earn a Master’s Degree in English Education from Arizona State University and completed extensive post-graduation work towards her doctorate degree, while she taught English at Scottsdale, Saguaro, and Coronado High Schools. In 1976, Barbara was a finalist for the Arizona English Teacher of the Year Award. Following retirement, Barbara remained active in Western College Alumnae Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Saguaro Retired Teachers Association, book clubs, and Republican state and local politics. She and her husband were members of the Trunk and Tusk Society. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, George Donald Broderick. She is survived by her brother Frederick “Fritz” Eugene Huls, II of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter Laura Leppert and her husband Tomas C. Leppert of Dallas, TX, daughter Rebecca Rodie, MD and her husband William Stuart Rodie, IV of Phoenix, AZ, as well as five grandchildren, Christian Leppert, Catherine Leppert , Ryan Leppert, Elizabeth Rodie , and William Rodie.
